Our Specialty Coffee

What makes Three Llamas Coffee different?

Three Llamas specialises in high-quality Arabica specialty coffee, with a Peruvian range sourced from Cajamarca in Northern Peru and freshly roasted in Woodend, North Canterbury.

Explore distinctive flavours, different roast profiles and certified organic specialty options to find a coffee that suits your taste.

Discover our story.

What is the difference between specialty coffee and “premium” coffee?

Specialty coffee reflects recognised standards of coffee quality. “Premium” is a marketing description and, on its own, does not confirm a particular grade or quality standard.

At Three Llamas, both our specialty range and our certified organic range are specialty coffee. We focus on carefully sourced Arabica beans, distinctive flavour and thoughtful roasting.

Is your certified organic coffee also specialty coffee?

Yes. Our certified organic coffees are also specialty coffee. Organic certification and specialty quality describe different aspects of the coffee: organic relates to certified production standards, while specialty relates to coffee quality.

Our certified organic selection includes Viva, Wellbeing, Medium Roast and Dark Roast.

Where do your coffee beans come from?

Our Peruvian specialty coffees come from Cajamarca in Northern Peru. This mountainous growing region produces Arabica coffee with distinctive flavour and natural sweetness.

Our current Colombian Popayan Reserve Decaf comes from Colombia. Individual product pages explain each coffee’s origin, processing method and tasting notes.

What does single-origin coffee mean?

Single-origin coffee comes from one identified source, such as a country, region, farm or producer group. It lets you explore the flavours associated with that origin.

Our Peruvian range showcases coffee from Cajamarca in Northern Peru, with different roast profiles offering different ways to enjoy its character.

Finding Your Favourite Coffee

Which Three Llamas coffee should I try first?

Essence is a great starting point if you enjoy rich, chocolatey coffee with brown sugar notes. It works beautifully with milk or as a black coffee.

If you prefer a certified organic specialty coffee, try Viva for milk chocolate, berry and creamy honey tasting notes.

Shop Essence or explore Viva.

Which coffee is best for flat whites, lattes and cappuccinos?

Essence is a good choice for milk coffees. Its rich profile and chocolate and brown sugar notes provide flavour that comes through the milk.

Viva is another option if you prefer certified organic specialty coffee with a smooth, creamy character.

Explore Essence or shop Viva.

Which coffee should I choose for black coffee?

Start with the tasting notes you enjoy. Essence offers chocolate, brown sugar and a hint of citrus, while Viva has milk chocolate, berry and creamy honey notes. Wellbeing offers cocoa nib, panela and hints of orange.

Your brewing method also affects the flavour. If you would like help choosing, tell us how you brew and what you enjoy.

Ask us for a coffee recommendation.

Can I use your coffee in a plunger, filter or stovetop coffee maker?

Yes. Coffees including Essence, Viva and Wellbeing suit a range of brewing methods. Choose your preferred coffee, then select the grind that matches your equipment.

For a plunger, choose Plunger grind; for a filter brewer, choose Filter; and for a stovetop coffee maker, choose Stovetop.

Do you sell whole beans and ground coffee?

Yes. Our coffee products offer whole beans and grind options including Filter, Plunger, Stovetop and Espresso.

Choose Beans if you have a grinder at home. Otherwise, select the grind that suits your coffee maker so your coffee arrives ready to brew.

Shop whole beans and ground coffee.

Do you sell decaf specialty coffee?

Yes. Our Colombian Popayan Reserve Decaf offers milk chocolate, honey and vanilla tasting notes, with a smooth profile that works with milk or black.

It uses a sugar cane decaffeination process and is available as whole beans or ground coffee. Decaf contains a small amount of residual caffeine.

Explore our decaf coffee.

What do the tasting notes on your coffee mean?

Tasting notes describe flavours and aromas you may notice in brewed coffee. Notes such as chocolate, honey or citrus help you compare coffees and choose a flavour profile you enjoy.

Your grind, water, brewing method and recipe will influence how those flavours appear in your cup.

How should I store my coffee at home?

Keep your coffee in an airtight container or a well-sealed coffee bag, away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight. A cool, dry cupboard is a good place.

If you buy whole beans, grind only what you need before brewing to help preserve their aroma and flavour.
